Two Characters: Film Intro

Writer's picture: SamSam

So far, I have completed the opening to my film. During this process I first made some concept sketches of the backdrop. My inspiration for the backdrop came from the videogame ABZÛ,which is an adventure game where you explore the heart of the ocean. I was drawn to the games use of light and colour which in turn created such a visually stunning artistic interpretation of the oceans. However, as I didn’t want the scenery to stand out more than the turtle, I tried to simplify it when drawing in photoshop. I kept the colours to blues and yellows so that the greens of the turtle and the pink coral with the tangled netting would stand out.

I wanted the introduction of my film to start with a camera pan across the sea-bed following a plastic bottle which leads us to the turtle. I felt this would really help set the scene and show the audience where my story is set as well as the issue that might be explored. To do this I had to make the length of my background twice as long, with the dimensions 1080x3840. This meant I could pan across the landscape when creating a camera in After Effects. I also made sure each element of the setting was on separate layers so that I could separate them from each other which would create the depth-of-field effect I wanted when panning across the seascape.

After completing my first successful export and reviewing it with some friends and tutors we found that the lighting was a slightly too vibrant which didn’t work with the gloomy tone I wanted to create at the start of my film. Therefore, I went back into after effects and experimented with lighting and different washes to create a more muted tone and I believe this was successful.

My plan now is to start animating my turtle and scuba diver, as introduction process did take longer than expected since I had to learn After Effects for the first time. Now that I have further knowledge on how the program works, I will hopefully be able to successfully complete other segments of my film that require After Effects in less time.
